Siyo, my name is Lexi Melton. I’m 24 years old and am from Vinita, Oklahoma.
I’ve wanted to participate in Remember the Removal for a decade. I was selected as a rider for the 2024 team but sustained an injury at the end of training which stopped me from being able to participate.
In 2025, I was given a second chance to be a part of the 2025 team.
Training to participate for the Remember The Removal for two years has truly been a blessing.
This program is truly an eye-opening experience to the horrific injustice our ancestors endured. It was an honor to be able to retrace their steps from New Echota, GA to Tahlequah, OK. Stopping at historical stops such as Blythes Ferry, Port Royal and Mantle Rock truly allows you to immerse yourself in those spaces and sense their sorrow and heart break. This program gives you the space to not only learn about your own resilience, strength and perseverance but Cherokee Nation’s as a whole.
